Pack It Up, Pack It In

Let us begin. So you’re headed to SE Asia…

Ah, the eternal packing struggle – are you lugging a whole wardrobe, packing like a minimalist, or unintentionally leaving behind essentials? The truth is, the packing puzzle reveals its twists only when you're on the move. With just days left before my adventure, picture me anxiously circling my bags like a neurotic vulture, engaging in wild Amazon shopping sprees for the oddest items, and seeking packing advice from the uninitiated about Southeast Asia. Yes, my travel jitters had evolved into a full-blown packing comedy. But did I let that stop me? Absolutely not. I dove into the chaotic task with gusto and managed pull together some tips on the way.

I've put together this blog post as a launchpad for your packing fiasco. Remember, each person's bag will have its own personality, but these items should give you a solid starting point. And let's talk about the weight factor – I aimed for the light side to ensure smooth solo travels from spot to spot. So, let's dive right in!

 Clothing

Well, I've learned my lesson post trip – I definitely packed more than I needed. But hey, no worries, right? From now on, my mantra is simple and yours should be too: when in doubt, just leave it out! But here was the starting point for my packing:

  • 6 shirts (3 shirts, 2 tanks tops, one athletic top)

  • 4 shorts

  • 1 maxi dress

  • 1 romper

  • 2 skirts

  • Pjs (old shirt and shorts)

  • 1 scarf

  • 4 bralettes

  • 3 swimsuits

  • 3 pairs of shoes (Nikes, flip flops, covered walking shoes)

  • 2 sunglasses

  • One crossbody purse with multiple pockets

  • Smaller wristlet that can fit inside my other purse.

Electronics

Here's a tip: You likely won't require as much stuff here. Personally, because I work remotely, having my essentials on hand is a game-changer. But unless you're in the same boat, I wouldn't advise going all-in with your packing.

  • My mac

  • Mac case

  • Mac charger

  • Universal charger

  • USB

  • Iphone

  • Kindle

  • Kindle charger

  • Wifi device

  • Headlamp

Toiletries

  • Meds

    • I bought OTC meds like benadryl and advil, birth control, as well as my big guns: malaria pills, travelers diarrhea pills, antibiotics, and steroids.

  • Makeup

    • Tried to keep this to a minimum but I brought foundation, mascara, bronzer, eyeliner, and lip balm.

  • Feminine Items

  • Hair ties and bobby pins

  • Comb

  • Shampoo, Dry Shampoo and Conditioner

  • Makeup wipes

  • Actual wipes

  • Sunscreen

    • Some of the skin care products here have legit bleach in them (people want their skin to be lighter there) so bring your own!

  • DEET mosquito repellent and wipes

  • Mosquito repellent bracelet

  • Tweezers/Nail Clippers

Necessary and Other

  • Osprey 70L Wayfarer

    • Check out my hunt for the perfect backpacking bag here.

  • Copies of my passport, insurance, and credit cards

  • Knife bracelet- stay safe out there y’all

  • Passport photos for extra visas

  • Bike lock

    • This can help you lock up your bag if you are around. In the hostel just lock your larger bag to your bed for added safety. Usually they will have lockers for your actual valuables.

  • Rain cover for my backpack

  • Collapsible water bottle

  • Microfiber travel towel

  • Sleeping mask

  • Ear plugs

  • First aid kit

  • Waterproof phone dry bag

  • Portable speaker

  • Hand sanitizer

And there you have it, the essentials to keep in mind! Of course, every traveler's bag will be as unique as their journey, but a little thoughtful preparation can work wonders in easing those pre-trip jitters. Remember, you almost always need far less than what you're initially tempted to bring along. So, here's to efficient packing and fearless exploring! What did you bring/leave on your trips?
